Joy in Action!

Enthusiasm is joy in action; it is having passion, fervor or zeal for something. It is extreme positive energy in the present moment! ~Dr. Angela Kowitz Orobko

Enthusiasm is one of my favorite words as it expresses joy in action; it is having a keen interest, excitement, fervor or zeal in a cause or subject. It is cheerful and exciting because it expresses a higher level of energy. It is being passionate with joy for those items in our life that we consider important. Enthusiasm is a word that has its origins in the Greek language for “inspired by God.”

Enthusiasm is tossed into a group of such delicious words  such as: ardor, avidity, conviction, craze, dash, devotion, eagerness, earnestness, ecstasy, élan, emotion, energy, exhilaration, fanaticism, feeling, fervor,  fire, flame, flare, frenzy, fury, gaiety, glow, gusto, heat, hilarity, hobby, impetuosity, intensity, interest, joy, keenness, life, mania, mirth, nerve, oomph, orgasm, passion, pep, rapture, relish, snap, spirit, transport, vehemence, verve, vim, vivacity, warmth, zeal, zealousness, and zest

Norman Vincent Peale stated, “If you have zest and enthusiasm you attract zest and enthusiasm. Life does give back in kind.” I agree wholeheartedly with Norman Vincent Peale. I have yet to find people who are not affected by my enthusiasm. I have that effect on others even animals.

This leads me to a quote by Charles Schwab, “A man can succeed at almost anything for which he has unlimited enthusiasm.”  And, Vince Lombardi said, “If you aren’t fired with enthusiasm, you will be fired with enthusiasm.” (He cracks me up!)  Ralph Waldo Emerson stated, “Enthusiasm is the mother of effort, and without it nothing great was ever achieved.”  Have you ever seen anything worthwhile done without enthusiasm?

In the words of Henry Ford: Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes shine to the stars. Enthusiasm is the sparkle in your eyes, the swing in your gait. The grip of your hand, the irresistible surge of will and energy to execute your ideas.

In my words, enthusiasm is the twinkle in my toes and the wiggle in my nose; it is the swing in my hips and the smile upon my lips! Enthusiasm is the thumping of my heart to the beat of my ideas that drums out a rhythm of inspiration for all to see.

Oliver Wendell Holmes wonderfully sums it up, “It’s FAITH IN something and  ENTHUSIASM FOR something that makes LIFE WORTH LIVING. Are you embracing your ENTHUSIASM FOR something?

Once in a Blue Moon

Blue Moon as sung by Ella Fitzgerald

Blue Moon
You saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own
Blue Moon
You know just what I was there for
You heard me saying a prayer for
Someone I really could care for

And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will hold
I heard somebody whisper please adore me
And when I looked to the Moon it turned to gold

Blue Moon
Now I’m no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own

And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will ever hold
I heard somebody whisper please adore me
And when I looked the Moon had turned to gold

Blue moon
Now I’m no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own

Blue moon
Now I’m no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own

Songwriters: RODGERS, RICHARD/HART, LORENZ

I have always been fascinated by the term, “blue moon” and the stories behind them. I have always believed a “blue moon” to imply a rare occurrence. When I was child, I believe I thought the moon would literally be blue. As the “blue moon” rises, let us take this time to ponder and contemplate its wisdom and beauty. What is the lesson in a “blue moon”, a rare event? Rare moments could be celebrated and cherished? Often rare natural events were revered in history.

Without further ado, I thought it would be appropriate to share what I learned with you. A “blue moon” may either signify the third full moon in a season with four full moons, or the second full moon in a month. The term “blue moon” comes from folklore. Various cultures, traditions and conventions place the extra “blue” full moon at different times in the year. Most of the following information comes from Wikipedia.

The earliest recorded English usage of the term “blue moon” was in a 1524 pamphlet violently attacking the English clergy,[4] entitled “Rede Me and Be Not Wrothe” (“Read me and be not angry”; or possibly “Counsel Me and Be Not Angry”[5]): “If they say the moon is belewe / We must believe that it is true” [If they say the moon is blue, we must believe that it is true].

Another interpretation uses another Middle English meaning of belewe, which (besides “blue”) can mean “betray”.[2] By the 18th century, before the Gregorian calendar reform, the medieval computus was out of sync with the actual seasons and the moon, and occasionally spring would have begun and a full moon passed a month before the computus put the first spring moon.[6][7] Thus, the clergy needed to tell the people whether the full moon was the Easter moon or a false one, which they may have called a “betrayer moon” (belewe moon) after which people would have had to continue fasting for another month by the season of Lent.[8]

Modern interpretation of the term relates to absurdities and impossibilities; the phrase “once in a blue moon” refers to an event that will take place only at incredibly rare occasions.[9]

The most literal meaning of “blue moon” is when the moon (not necessarily a full moon) appears to a casual observer to be unusually bluish, which is a rare event. The effect can be caused by smoke or dust particles in the atmosphere, as has happened after forest fires in Sweden and Canada in 1950 and 1951,[11] and after the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883, which caused the moon to appear blue for nearly two years. Other less potent volcanoes have also turned the moon blue. People saw blue moons in 1983 after the eruption of the El Chichon volcano in Mexico, and there are reports of blue moons caused by Mount St. Helens in 1980 and Mount Pinatubo in 1991.[12]

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Maine Farmers’ Almanac listed blue moon dates for farmers. These correspond to the third full moon in a quarter of the year when there were four full moons (normally a quarter year has three full moons). Full moon names are given to each moon in a season: For example, the first moon of summer is called the early summer moon, the second is called the midsummer moon, and the last is called the late summer moon. When a season has four moons the third is called the blue moon so that the last can continue to be called the late moon.

The March 1946 Sky and Telescope article “Once in a Blue Moon” by James Hugh Pruett misinterpreted the 1937 Maine Farmers’ Almanac. “Seven times in 19 years there were — and still are — 13 full moons in a year. This gives 11 months with one full moon each and one with two. This second in a month, so I interpret it, was called Blue Moon.” Widespread adoption of the definition of a “blue moon” as the second full moon in a month followed its use on the popular radio program StarDate on January 31, 1980.[1][15] (Wikipedia)

Blue moons between 2009 and 2016 (Wikipedia)

The following blue moons occur between 2009 and 2016. These dates use UTC as the timezone; exact dates vary with different time zones.

Seasonal

Using the Farmers’ Almanac definition of blue moon (meaning the third full moon in a season of four full moons), blue moons occur

  • November 21, 2010
  • August 21, 2013
  • May 21, 2016

It seems that The Farmers’ Almanac, even though it describes the Sky & Telescope ‘invention’ of the new definition, is now using the new definition of blue moon on its calendar,[16] therefore indicating that the blue moon is August 31, 2012 instead of August 21, 2013. (Wikipedia)

Calendar

Unlike the astronomical seasonal definition, these dates are dependent on the Gregorian calendar and time zones.

Two full moons in one month:[17]

  • 2009: December 2, December 31 (partial lunar eclipse visible in some parts of the world), only in time zones west of UTC+05.
  • 2010: January 1 (partial lunar eclipse), January 30, only in time zones east of UTC+04:30.
  • 2010: March 1, March 30, only in time zones east of UTC+07.
  • 2012: August 2, August 31, only in time zones west of UTC+08.
  • 2015: July 2, July 31

The next time New Year’s Eve falls on a Blue Moon (as occurred on 2009 December 31) is after one Metonic cycle, in 2028. At that time there will be a total lunar eclipse. (Wikipedia)

Is Yours Worth Catching?

Nothing invites more positive attention than a great attitude along with a captivating smile! ~ Dr. Angela Kowitz Orobko

Attitudes are truly contagious. I make an effort to keep my attitude positive especially in the face of negativity, challenges and emotional vampires (people who literally exhaust you emotionally). When I continue to share love and kindness in all my actions with no expectation of anything in return, I ultimately feel better. My energy level is higher.

Have you seen this in your own experiences? Go into any situation with a positive attitude and you will feel great afterward. It is a double blessing when you receive a winning outcome, especially if the others involved come out of it with a positive attitude. This builds positive relationships with people.

On the flip side, when you go into a situation with anger or another negative attitude, most likely you will infect others. They will be negative right back at you. That would benefit no one! Nothing invites more positive attention than a great attitude. Awareness is key; keep your attitude in check. Remember, attitudes are contagious. Is yours worth catching?

Choose Joy

Joy is a choice; it is doing what you love most! ~ Dr. Angela Kowitz Orobko

Joy…expressed with a smile and felt in the heart. It is an elusive feeling for many, but why? Joy is a CHOICE! That’s right! It is a choice.

How? you ask. Look at your current situation. How do you feel about it? Why do you feel that way? Can you see other ways of looking at your situation? Do you see opportunities for joy in it?

For example, if you lost your current job, which for many, heck for most, can be devastating…but for those who choose to see joy in any situation sees an opportunity to finally look for a career they really love. Do you see how joy can work its way into your life if you so choose? I certainly hope so. It is my desire and prayer that you do. With joy, may you be blessed!

Have you been KEEPING your New Year’s Resolution?

RESOLVE…DETERMINATION…PERSEVERANCE…

COURAGE…FAITH…INTENTION…DREAMS…VISION…

TRANSFORMATION…GOALS…CHANGE…FOLLOW THROUGH….

Have you been KEEPING your New Year’s Resolution?

First of all what are resolutions? Resolutions are those decisions you make that you wish to follow through. I resolve…solve again? It is making a firm intention or a determination; it is a formal expression of opinion or intention. Let us work with the definition that involves the word intention. When you made your intention for the year…

1. Were you specific; did you delineate? Instead of saying I will be fit in 2012, define how; for example: I will add 10 more minutes of activity a day and eat more fruits and vegetables instead of white breads and pasta; instead of saying I want to write more this year or I want to write a book this year, set out a plan of writing 3 to 5 pages a day.

2. Have you been taking small, baby steps and/or five-minute starts? For example: taking 5 minutes to plan a meal or to write a paragraph or to walk around your home to get in a little activity.

3. Did you visualize your end result? Such as visualizing yourself fitting into elegant outfit or holding a finished product.

4. Did  you seek help or support? For example: Join a fitness club or program; get a writing coach; or find good writing prompts.

5. Did you get a buddy to keep you on track? For example: A fitness witness or scribe tribe who will keep you accountable.

6. Did you reflect often as we are doing now? Look back on the progress you have made and the accomplishments through the year (graph your progress). Yes there may be moments where you slip up or do not follow through; but, the overall sense of accomplishment is there. You are making the effort. And it is never too late to get back on the wagon.

7. Have you celebrated your mini-victories. Be sure to pat yourself on the back for each day you are moving towards your goal and intention for the year.

September 1st is on Saturday; a great day to reexamine your intentions and reactivate your plans to get to your end-of-the-year goals. 4 months left in the year, that is 122 days plus the four days more days left in this month. Break it down into bite-sized, easy to swallow chunks. Some progress is better than none! Yes, you can follow through on your intentions. You will succeed!

Nurture…our hearts and our friendships with joy and love.

Nurture…feed, protect, support, encourage…our hearts and our friendships with joy and love. ~ Dr. Angela Kowitz Orobko

I define nurture in this passage as: to feed and protect; to support and encourage; foster.  For our own well-being and that of the world it is important to nurture our friendships as well as our own hearts. I believe I can do both, nurture my heart and my friendships, at the same time.  Spending time with friends, socializing, eating, drinking and being merry supports and encourages love and joy in our hearts.

The hearts of our friends as well as our own hearts are being nurtured as we spend time together and simply being in the moment with each other by giving our undivided attentions to each other.  Every moment we have is a blessing that should be fully appreciated.  Sharing these precious moments with others is a great way to appreciate those moments and nurture our own hearts as well as the hearts of our friends.  Friendship is a form of love that deserves to be nurtured.

I will nurture my heart by feeding it joy and protecting it from negative feelings. I will support and encourage my heart with only those activities that I take delight. I will foster happiness in my life. This will nurture me! By nurturing me, I can nurture my friends and the world.  Self-care is so important. It is vital that we do not neglect ourselves. How are we able to take care of others when we are not taking care of ourselves? By NURTURING, feeding, protecting, supporting, encouraging, our hearts and our friendships with joy and love.

Miss Things

Funny, how we do not miss things until we no longer have them.
~ Dr. Angela Kowitz Orobko

I told my sister this when I learned that her microwave oven stopped working, yesterday; and, she wanted to warm her coffee this morning. She had to use the stove-top. Then I started thinking this is not only true of those convenient appliances in our lives, but also with people in our lives. How often do we stop and truly appreciate the loved ones in our lives?

My life would be different without my husband, my family, my friends and my fur-baby (puppy-dog, Sasha). I try not to become complacent and take for granted that they will always be in my life. I am grateful for the reminders such as not having use of my car and computer, both of which I had to do without for a few days this past week. These temporary hassles serve to jostle my memory of what and who is important in my life. Yes, I missed not having my computer and car as these are important to my livelihood; but, I would miss my loved ones even more.

Surviving tragic events in our lives such as hurricanes, fires and tornadoes serve as eye-opening reminder of exactly what truly is important in our lives. Things can be replaced. People cannot. Let us count our blessings and appreciate the loved ones in our lives. And, let me take this moment to let you know how much I appreciate you for reading my blog. You are wonderful and I am deeply grateful!

Bouncing Back…

Bouncing back from a challenge in our life inspires others and ultimately brings joy to everyone.
~ Dr. Angela Kowitz Orobko

Bouncing back and recovering from a disheartening situation is resilience. Some people are more resilient than others. How do they do it? I believe resilience is developed over time through overcoming difficult times in our lives, whether it be the death of a loved one or coping with hurtful words. Seeing the blessings in our situation is one way to do this.

Consider the following questions like: What can I learn from this? What is good about this? What is the gift or opportunity in this situation? What is funny about this? This will help us gain a different perspective of a difficult situation and allow us to grow from it to become more resilient. Bouncing back from a challenge in our life inspires others and ultimately brings joy to everyone.

Success and Happiness

Success cannot be measured in material things and money; these do not guarantee happiness. Success and happiness come from valuing your abilities, celebrating the positive, appreciating the present and being flexible.
~ Dr. Angela Kowitz Orobko

What is success (to me)? Success is my ability to appreciate each moment, to celebrate the positive points in my life, to face the challenges head-on, to be open to learn new things, to be decisive and goal-oriented, and to look forward. Success is what I make of it, as thoughts become reality.

I make a point to think positive thoughts. I try not to entertain negative thoughts especially those of others. Only my thoughts truly count. I count my blessings and appreciate the present moment.

Each hour affords us 3600 seconds to which I wish to use wisely and positively; because once they are spent, they are gone. I cannot get those seconds back. We are not guaranteed time. So, we need to appreciate each moment we have and use each moment to promote joy and love in our lives and in the lives of others.

I try to celebrate the positive aspects of my life. This helps me to stay focused to the important anti-bullying work that I do. Reliving the negative would only serve to distract me sending me into a downward spiral to despair. Why go there? Each of us has an abundance of positive moments in our lives that we can embrace and celebrate. This brings joy to our lives, which is followed by productivity and success.

I embrace new learning experiences and face challenges head-on. I am open to new ideas and opportunities to create a solution. I can detach myself from old ways of thinking when they no longer serve me. Possibilities are endless to those who can see beyond what they think they already know.

Success comes when I have a vision. I look to the future. My past mistakes have given me the fortitude and experiences from which to build. I have learned what does not work. Success becomes inevitable. Happiness follows as I have grown to appreciate myself, my abilities, the present moment and all the loved ones in my life.

Today is the Tomorrow…

Today is the tomorrow I dreamt about yesterday. I wish this were my original thought, but I know I have heard it before. It is one that I often live by as I believe it is important to live in the moment as if it were our last one to make a difference for ourselves and others.

Time is so fleeting, so doing what we feel we need to do right now instead of waiting  is important. Why wait until tomorrow? Why put off activities and experiences for a later time when we can do them right now? Tomorrow is not guaranteed. We only have this present moment. Live for the moment. Seize it and make it count whenever you can. Live, love and laugh!
