Einstein and Pi…Oh my!

AKO-EinsteinPi

What do Albert Einstein and Pi have in common? March 14 is both Albert Einstein’s birthday and it is Pi (π) Day!

Einstein was born March 14, 1879, which would make him 134 years old if he were still alive! And Pi is celebrated on March 14 because it is the first few digits in the number Pi (3.14).

Pi π -Number. The number π is a mathematical constant that is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, and is approximately equal to 3.14159. Wikipedia

In honor of both I would like to share 14 of my favorite Albert Einstein quotes and a great π website: http://www.piday.org/million/.
  1. Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.
  2. Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts.
  3. The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.
  4. Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.
  5. I am convinced that (God) does not play dice.
  6. Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
  7. A person starts to live when he can live outside himself.
  8. Ethical axioms are found and tested not very differently from the axioms of science. Truth is what stands the test of experience.
  9. Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.
  10. It is harder to crack a prejudice than an atom.
  11. As our circle of knowledge expands, so does the circumference of darkness surrounding it.
  12. Computers are incredibly fast, accurate and stupid.  Human beings are incredibly slow, inaccurate and brilliant. Together they are powerful beyond imagination.
  13. You cannot simultaneously prevent and prepare for war.
  14. Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.
Let us always be curious, use our imagination, be understanding and be true to ourselves! Happy birthday Einstein! Happy π Day!

P.S. Yes, that is an original drawing of Einstein that I did last year. I digitally drew in π onto it.  Doc Angi

Hope Revisited

What is hope? Hope is holding onto a belief of a positive future. It is having faith. It is trusting that everything will be alright. The anticipation of a positive outcome or event can also define hope. Everything will turn out for the best. Hope is to wish for something with the expectation of its fulfillment. Can hope lead to disappointment? Maybe, but I would rather be hopeful than despondent or in a state of despair. There is more joy in hope.

On hope, the wisdom of the following express what I, too, believe.

Albert Einstein stated: “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.”

Martin Luther King, Jr. said: “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”

Thomas Jefferson expressed: “My theory has always been, that if we are to dream, the flatteries of hope are as cheap, and pleasanter, than the gloom of despair.

My question to you is: what are your hopes? Never stop hoping.  (from January 22, 2012)

These words still hold true for me now. Hope is optimistic! Hope gives one something for which to strive. Giving up hope is failing to try to live a life of possibility.

Why go down that road to despair and depression? Even if a situation seems hopeless, you gain so much more in reaching for the winning outcomes and experiencing life. We will lose/fail one hundred percent of those things we never attempt. Failure only occurs when we stop trying. Hope keeps our hearts blissful. It is that positive anticipation that drives our life purpose.

You decide, what are your personal gains or losses to hope? Do the gains out-measure the losses? I have a feeling that they do.

Opposing forces…

Most everything I know in life and in nature has an opposite. Day has night. Dark has light. Hot has cold. Male has female. These opposing forces can create balance when applied with the same amount of force on each side. Have you ever felt off-balanced or out of sorts? Most people have. What does balance look like?

One can think of balance as being in a place where it is neither hot nor cold. It is warm and comfortable; it is purple, orange or green; it is maybe; it is something in between the extremes. Balance is about being in the middle. Visualize a circus performer balancing on a tight-rope and walking slowly and deliberately. That is one way of looking at balance.

A great example is learning to ice skate or roller blade. You want to balance on your skates. You do this by using opposing forces. If you feel you are going to fall to the right, you pull your body to the left.

How can balance be applied to one’s life or how can one get balance in his or her life? Awareness is the first step to achieving balance. Stop, look and reflect and see what might be causing the imbalance. An unexpected event can cause imbalance in one’s life, such as, a car accident or losing one’s job. How does one cope with life-altering events? Change your focus from the life-altering situation and look at the big picture. How?

The best way to change your focus and get back into balance is to ask a few questions: What is the lesson in all of this? What is the positive side in this situation? Where is the opportunity in this situation? How can I bless it and move back to a place of equilibrium? And, what can I laugh about this situation in my life?

Seeing a negative situation from different perspectives can help one achieve balance. Talk to yourself as if you were looking at yourself as another person, in other words, try to be fair and objective. Balance can be achieved when people address themselves with their given names. Take for instance a person is laid off from his or her job. Self-dialogue could look something like this: (The person’s name is Joe or Mary.) “Hey, Joe/Mary, yes life is less than perfect right now, but look at the blessings in the situation… it is a blessing to meet new people and explore different fields, it is an opportunity to learn something new, it is a chance to see things differently; yes, it hurts right now, but now different choices and decisions can be made about the future…”

One of the best things an individual can do to get from a place of imbalance to balance is to do something opposite from he or she would normally do. If one is traditionally very independent and almost never communicates his or her challenges to others, then, perhaps it is due time for this person to seek guidance from an expert or counselor. If one continues to do what he or she have always done, then he or she will continue to get what he or she have always gotten (a quote adopted from Anthony Robbins and edited by Dr. Angela Kowitz Orobko). Here is an amusing thought that Albert Einstein shared, “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Does this suggest many people are insane? Perhaps.

Consider this, how can people shift their thoughts and emotions toward balance? How can one use opposing forces in his or her life? How might it feel?

Imagination Day 2

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”Albert Einstein

Indeed, it is not just embracing the entire world but also the entire Universe with all of its galaxies and its multidimensional parts, which transcends (goes beyond) time and space. Allow yourself to think about those things that go beyond what you know. Imagine being the size of a sub-atomic particle in a sub-atomic world where everything seems to be in motion. What would that feel like? What would that look like?

Would you get motion sickness as you hitch a ride with an electron or would you invite the thrill of soaring between molecules as you merge with other elements? Is it dark or bright? Is it colorful? What do you hear around you? Are the sounds around you angelic and serene?

You can imagine it to be whatever you wish it to be. Are you part of a crystal or are you in a fluid state, flowing gently as a mountain stream in the late spring. Are you contained within an animal or a plant? Would you even know? How can you tell the difference?

Asking yourself questions each day from different points of view is a fantastic way to develop your imagination. Each day this week, more prompts will be presented to help you develop your imagination. I invite you to write or draw around these questions. Please feel free to share your experiences in the comments below. Feedback is always welcomed.  Enjoy the process and have fun.

Imagination

“Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” ~ Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein had a great deal of respect for the imagination. Without imagination, how can people make a discovery or tap into their creativity? Consider these words: Image, Imagine, Imagination, Magi, Magic. Indeed by looking at them they seem related. The act of forming images on one’s mind is imagination. This seems to be a magical process. Children have vivid imaginations.

Why is it that so many adults lose this part of themselves? This question is best left for you to answer as speculation on part of the writer would only be her humble opinion. However, how does one recapture his or her imagination? This is the first article in a series on how to do this as there are numerous ways to tap into one’s imagination.

First, let go of the worries of tomorrow and enjoy this moment. Be open only to receive how you feel right now as you read this article and look upon the artwork. Now close your eyes for a few moments, and pretend you are a butterfly. After a few moments, open your eyes and consider the following questions: How did it feel to have wings? How did the world look to you as a butterfly? Consider your life as a butterfly, were you always a butterfly? What did it feel like when you were a caterpillar? How did the world seem to you as a caterpillar? Describe your transformation into a butterfly. Were you scared or did you feel safe and secure, when you were in your cocoon? How did it feel to emerge from that cocoon? How did it feel to use a little imagination? Please share your experiences in the comments below. Come back tomorrow for more imagination fun and development.

Balance

Have you ever felt off-balanced or out of sorts? Most people have. What does balance look like and how does one define balance? Balance is a state of equilibrium, where one is in a place of contentment.

Andy Dooley has a fabulous you tube video that address how to feel good. Feeling good can equate to feeling balanced as long as one is feeling good when he or she is back in his or her routine and balanced again.

Seeing a negative situation from different perspectives can help one achieve balance. Talk to yourself as if you were looking at yourself as another person, in other words, try to be objective. Balance can be achieved when people address themselves with their given names. Self-dialogue could look something like this: (The person’s name is Joe or Mary.) “Hey, Joe/Mary, yes life is less than perfect right now, but look at the blessings in the situation… it is a blessing to meet talented people in a different field of expertise, it is a chance to learn something new, it is a blessing to see things differently; yes, it hurts right now, but now different choices and decisions can be made about the future…”

One can also achieve balance by sitting in quiet, which means take time to sit alone in silence and simply breathe slowly. Focus on the breathing. If one needs more centering and focus, then one can pray or meditate. A person can pray for balance or simply state over and over in his or her mind: “I am in balance” or ” I have balance” or “I am balance.” Ambient music or sounds of nature in the background may help to create an environment conducive to prayer and meditation. Using aromatherapy is also a great way to create a tranquil environment.

When one is in a state of overwhelm there are three things he or she can do to get balance again. First of all, one can make small movements toward the source of the overwhelm like needing to lose 50 pounds or putting together a major business proposal.  A person can take little steps; it is movement, albeit small, that will ultimately get a person to his or her big goal. These mini-goals could be like letting go of one to two pounds a week or tackling the business proposal in chunks (such as researching it or writing it in fifteen minute bites).

The second thing one can do is not get hung up on perfectly moving toward his or her major goal. It is still a movement toward his or her goal. When one is moving toward a weight loss goal, he or she need not get caught up in the minutia of having to follow a weight loss plan perfectly. If one had a lapse of judgment for a snack or meal, this does not have to sabotage the efforts one has already put into his or her weight loss progress. An individual can simply take ownership of that one mishap and make the next decision a better one. In creating a business proposal, writing something is better than writing nothing at all. One can always edit his or her work after the proposal is completed.

The third thing one can do is to create a support system or delegate some of the responsibility of that overwhelming goal. With a business proposal, one can seek others to do the research so he or she can work on the writing. With weight loss goals, one can seek a support system with others who also wish to lose weight. They can hold each other accountable, dialogue about the challenges they have had, and celebrate the small and large victories.

One of the best things an individual can do to get from a place of imbalance to balance is to do something totally different.

How does it feel?
