Pass It On

“The point is not to pay back kindness but to pass it on.”
– Julia Alvarez

Some of my fondest memories are those when I got to pass on things to others. The joy of spreading love and kind words is almost indescribable. Imagine receiving and holding in your hands the most beautiful object in the world and then sharing it with someone else. The warmth that starts in your heart spreads throughout your body as you allow the love and kindness to flow from you. You may even see a smile on another’s face after you passed it on. This is a double blessing.

Love and kindness are the most beautiful objects (although it is not a physical objects…it can still be felt) that we can pass on. And, what is so remarkable about sharing love and kindness, is that your heart fills up with more love and kindness in the process. It is a gift that gives back such positive feelings in return. Imagine that. It is so wonderful and amazing!

Today I wish to pass on to you blessings of a glorious upcoming first weekend of the season as you close out your week. May you experience joy and peace as you prepare for the first full week of Summer (or Winter), which is also the last week of June.  I hope you will be able to be around all your loved ones and be engaged in all your favorite activities! What do you wish to pass on?

Gifts of Love Update 15

I have 51 Gifts of Love completed! I am over the hump just in time for Hump Day! (Warm laughter.) The weather today was quite stormy with severe lightning and thunder. We even received a flash flood warning for the area in which I live. I am grateful to God that the warning was unfounded; our yard is saturated and at one point the deluge of rain was creating pools of water, not just puddles that flooded my vegetable garden, but not our home. My husband and I took a few precautions and moved all items of importance a couple of feet higher. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Below is a slideshow presentation of the latest Gifts of Love. Make sure you leave a comment if you want to win a Gift of Love. Each week a winner will be selected from a random drawing of all those who have left comments during the week.

Loving Yourself to Love the World

How many times have we called ourselves a dork, a bonehead, fat, ugly, stupid?  We are bullying ourselves; and, this hurts our heart just as much as, if not more, if someone else did it.  It is time we love and practice exquisite care of ourselves. Go to a mirror, face yourself, and look yourself right in the eyes. Verbalize how wonderful you are . Say it with meaning and conviction. Point out how loving and caring you are. Be kind to yourself. Be gentle to your soul and love your very essence.

Embrace your beautiful life as if today is your last day to live; then glorify each moment.  Experience every little thing you do with all your senses.  Make your bath a cleansing ritual that erases all the negativity and let the water positively cleanse your heart and soul.  Feel the warmth of the water playing on your skin as it splashes down.  Smell the fragrance of the soap as it bubbles around you.  Observe the steam misting around you.

During mealtime, as you are eating visualize each bite of food nourishing each cell of your body.  Savor each flavor as it dances on your tongue.  Take great delight in every little thing that you do.  Learn to appreciate and value everything that is you and everything that you do in your daily life.  As we start taking exquisite care of ourselves, we become our own best friend.

It is when we can be our own best friend that we can be friends to others, love others and love the world. If we are empty vessel, how can we love others? Taking care of our needs, not just our physical needs, but also our emotional and spiritual needs allows us to be whole and complete for others. As a we approach and connect with other people, we can do so without question or fear or insecurities. We can be completely present for our family,  friends and peers; furthermore, we can be a source of love and light because our spiritual self is whole.

Today, I completed more Gifts of Love. We are halfway there! Yes, 50 Gifts of Love are completed! I will be able to photograph them tomorrow to share with you. The winner of last week’s drawing for a Gift of Love is wfedan. Congratulations! Remember, the only thing you need to do to be included in the drawing for a Gift of Love, is to comment on my blog anytime during the week. The more you comment, the better your chances to win. If you do not wish to be included in the drawing, just add “omit me” after your comment. I do love feedback. It is the best way for me to learn, develop and evolve as a writer and artist. Thank you all so much for all of your support. I am so very grateful!!! Together we can make positive changes in this world.

Gifts of Love Update 11

The winner of last week’s drawing is….drum roll…..Poetic Dreams!!!  Congratulations!!

I wanted to post more creations today; but, my scanner was not cooperating. I am so close to having 100 Gifts of Love with background. Hopefully I will be able to share them with you tomorrow! My heart is filled with joy that I am able to create these tokens of love and then give them out. I would really love to see this campaign grow!

If you are interested in creating  your own Gifts of Love, please go to Hearts That Care at http://www.heartsthatcare.net/ where I have posted more information. These expressions of love are a wonderful way to convey to others that you value and appreciate them.

I try to do as much as I can in a day to express my love and compassion for others, like hold open a door, help someone who is overloaded with packages, and while I am driving I look for opportunities, especially during high traffic times, to be courteous however I can. I know there are a million ways to express love and kindness. I would love to know what you do?

Thank you so much for reading and following my blog. I deeply appreciate it and your time! (I have over 100 followers now and it seems to grow daily! Thank you, thank you, thank you!)

Personal Self-Healing Portrait…You can do one, too.

Image

This is my personal self-healing portrait. By following what I did, you can make one, too. I first started with an art journal. I used a Strathmore Visual Journal with 140lb/300g paper because I used watercolors in my self-portrait.

On the left page, I used a soft-lead pencil to write self-critical sentences about myself; those things I know I should say about myself, but I find myself thinking at times…like, “I am not good enough or pretty enough to find success or have friends…etc. I filled the page to release all the pent up negative energy.

Then, on another sheet of paper I wrote down the good intentions behind those statements. My self-doubt gremlins wanted to protect me from being hurt. When you keep your self-esteem low, you are not likely to dream big. Big dreams leads to taking risks, which may result in great disappointment (or great success and joy); however, I know we automatically lose all those chances we do not take! We automatically fail all those activities we do not try!

I gave thanks to the negative statements (my gremlins of self-doubt) for their good intentions and over-painted my doubts, fears and negativity on the left page of my journal with gesso (a derivative of white acrylic paint) so those statements were no longer visible. On the right side of my journal I then sketched myself, emphasizing my best features. I used watercolor crayons and pencils.

Next, I added water and watercolor paints. I swept my hair to the left page and added a colorful background; I painted in hearts and added butterflies using a butterfly rubber stamp and ink. The final and most important step is to add a positive statement to heal my heart, “Believe in Yourself and Be Love.” I also added one word to my face to reinforce my healing, “FAITH.”

This art project was quite therapeutic. You could make this a collage project using a photograph of yourself, and other images and positive words, if drawing and painting are not your favorite activities. It would be fun to print out an image of yourself using the grey scale option. Then, you could color it any way you wanted. The possibilities are endless.

Art with Edie…Again!

I had an amazing day! I was able to guest-host on Edie’s show again today. Click here for the replay: Life By the Seat of my Pants – Positive Message STOP Sign. Edie also has a phenomenal blog with the same name: Life by the Seat of my Pants.

Today I demonstrated how to doodle using patterns inspired by Mother Nature. I started by explaining the 5 basic element families of shapes. Every shape is made from dots, circles, lines, curved lines and/or angled lines. This is instruction that comes from Mona Brookes’ book Art With Children. (For more information go to this link: Art Makes Kids Smart) Then, I started a doodle (in Zentangle style) on a 4-by-6 blank index card.  I shared a couple of objects from nature, a seashell and a whelk egg case on the show to show how patterns can be found in them. This inspired the spiral pattern and a repeated irregular rectangular pattern in the doodles I demonstrated on Edie’s show today. I then started a larger art pieces, a portrait with doodling around it.

Edie demonstrated creating a “You are AMAZING just the way you Are” sign as inspired by www.operationbeautiful .com that she plans to post on her neighborhood corner stop sign. The purpose of this Operation Beautiful campaign is to remind people how wonderful, beautiful and amazing they are by placing sticky notes and/or signs in conspicuous places that would grab people’s attentions. It is a fabulous idea; furthermore, it helps promote positive thinking. (Picture below shows the sign Edie made on the stop sign in her neighborhood.)

Sadly enough, too many of us put our own selves down daily with negative self-talk from the moment we get up and look in the mirror to start our daily routines. Instead of saying or thinking, “oh, gee! I look like “poop” this morning”; how about having a sticky note to remind us of how amazing, wonderful, beautiful and even sexy we are! Why not! Getting up in the morning would be a zillion times more fun if we greeted ourselves with “HEL-LO, sexy!” or “good morning  sunshine / bright eyes/beautiful!” I have a tickle in my heart just thinking about it. I love this idea Edie found and it has me thinking now of creative ways to bring positive attention to people. How about you, does this inspire some ideas? I would love to hear some feedback on this!

Gifts Of Love Update 9

Today I detailed 3 more Gifts Of Love; and, I went back  and added more details to Gift #29 and #30. I am almost completely satisfied with those two. I will look at them again tomorrow. I am certain I need to work on Gift #31 to add a little more details to her hands and feet (and maybe her face). I am pleased with my progress as I am putting so much heart into each of these Gifts Of Love.

Gifts Of Love #6 and #7 are in route to Laurie and Terri, the two winners for the weekly drawing. I will be drawing one or two more winners this week to receive a Gift of Love. Just leave me a comment to let me know you are interested. I love feedback and truly appreciate your comments.

Gifts of Love Update 8

Today I detailed 2 more Gifts of Love as you can see in the picture above. It has been a bit of a slow day as I seemed to have gotten a touch of flu or something. I am not surprised with the damp, cooler weather we have experienced lately.  I bet you are wondering who won this week for the Gift of Love bag drawing. I drew out the following 2 names: Terri Dorr and Laurie Story!! Congratulations!! I will be in contact with you this week to get your mailing addresses.

If any of you wish to be a recipient of one of these Gifts of Love, I will be doing a special drawing (one or two winners) each week until I finish painting all the Gifts of Love. I am on bag #30 for detailing and #68 for background art. All you need to do is leave a comment on my blog. The more comments you leave, the more times your name will go into the “hat”. The winners will be announced on Saturdays or Sundays. The Gift of Love will be sent out to you as soon as I get your mailing address.

Art Day with Edie

Today I had magnificent time with my friend Edie of Life by the Seat of my Pants.  I was a guest on her live on-line art show, Art by the Seat of my Pants and we had a fantastic time creating and teaching art today. I shared how to make the Gifts Of Love bags and Edie experimented using different media on Tyvek paper, which is the specialized water-resistant paper that is used for U.S. Post Service Priority Mail envelopes.

Edie started her program by introducing me and my Gift Of Love campaign. She shared the Gift of Love I gave her and she did a great job explaining the premise of the campaign, which is to pay Love forward to others. Inside the Gift of Love is a memento of the art of the bag printed on card stock and a letter with an original poem in it that I wrote entitled, Gift of Love. I will make the Gift Of Love campaign directions and its corresponding letter available this weekend on my website, Hearts That Care.

As we continued co-hosting Edie’s art show, I demonstrated how I did the backgrounds for these works of art. After doing 2 backgrounds, I set those aside to dry and started painting on one of my completed backgrounds to demonstrate how I conceptualize the images. I saw angel’s wings in this particular bag. Each bag is unique, but each bag will have at least one heart painted on it. The heart represents Love and Hearts That Care.

Edie did the second half of the show, where she used various painting and coloring materials on the Tyvek envelope. She started by using Gesso on half of it. While the Gesso dried, she used Neocolor, Intkense, Distress Ink, Water Color Paint, Craft Paint and Acrylic Paint on the “naked” side. Each of these materials acted differently. The Tyvek seems to have a waxy coating and a really interesting texture. The material seems indestructible. You cannot tear it easily. Edie also found that the Tyvek is not porous enough for most glues. You cannot glue things easily to Tyvek. Be sure to visit Edie’s blog. I am looking forward to doing more art shows with Edie in the future.
