Think Globally, Act Locally

AKO-GlobalLocalOne of the most wasteful times of the year occurs in December. Why do I say that? Simple. Increased local traffic to stores. More consumerism. PACKAGING and WRAPPING! There is more baking, cooking, visiting, etc.

Let us consider clever ways to reduce the amount of waste we generate. One of the most simple things we can consider is how we wrap our gifts to each other. One of my favorite things to do is use simple canvas bags as gift bags set with a colorful and festive fabric bow, both of which can be reused. Look  about your home and see what you can creatively use to wrap your gifts this year. Maybe you have some fabric you can use. How about using newspaper and collage it with colorful magazine pictures?

Maybe you can forgo material gifts. Perhaps you can give a gift of love and time instead by visiting and engaging in heartfelt conversations where your attention is undivided (yes, turn off that electronic device for an hour or so). Here is another wonderful possibility…share a skill with others by teaching them how to do something you are good at doing, such as: gardening, baking, crocheting, wood-working, scrap-booking, bird-watching, fishing, paper-crafting and so on and so forth.

Other ideas: Dovetail errands so you are using less gasoline; create more gifts instead of buying them from materials you already have at home; send e-cards via e-mail instead of sending paper cards through the mail; have a holiday gathering around a charity event or while being of service to the poor and the needy; etc.

What are some other things we could do to cut waste during this holiday season? The list is endless and the possibilities countless if you just put for five to ten minutes of thought into it. I came up with quite a few in the ten minutes I spent writing this article. Most of all, have fun with the ideas. The holidays of December are meant to be experienced with love, joy and reverence. Don’t stress. Merry Christmas! (Ten days away and counting down.)

The Smile

Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing. ~ Mother Teresa

Her gentle smile removed all worries…have you ever experienced that gentle smile? Maybe it was at the doctor’s office from the unnamed medical assistant; maybe it was the nameless cashier who handled your purchases at the grocery store; or maybe it was the unknown driver in the car next to yours. A smile is a gift. A gift we can share and a gift we can receive. Smiles have a way of removing fear and putting you at ease. I find when I smile, even at myself, it puts me in a wonderful state of mind. Smile, and the world smiles with you.

The above artwork is an original painting I did today in watercolor. The idea was to capture a gentle smile for my blog today. I added a little color pencil for the fine detail work. Not only do her lips smile, but so do her eyes. May this smile bring one to your face. If you would like to see more of my artwork you can find it on these three locations on the internet: 1. Blissful Art (Word Press blog), 2. Angela Kowitz Orobko, Ed.D. – Gallery  and 3. Encourage the Heart and Spirit

Affirmation, validation and appreciation encourage the heart and spirit. Whether we are receiving encouragement or giving it, our hearts and spirits fill with love and warmth. It is uplifting.

I find that the more encouragement I give, the more I receive. Imagine that. And, I find myself looking for opportunities to encourage others in their intentions, goals and dreams. If they want to try something new and/or worthwhile, I urge them to try it. And, wow, the expressions on their faces…priceless.

Sometimes encouragement is needed when we are experiencing a low moment. Encouragement may come in many forms; and, one of the best forms of encouragement is comfort for others by simply being there for them and listening. All we really need to do is attentively listen. Encouragement can be a smile, a wink or a hug. Encouragement may be the spoken or written word, art or music. Anything that moves another heart and spirit in a positive way is encouragement.

The gift of encouragement is one of the most valuable and affordable gifts we can give to our family, friends and peers. Can you remember a time in your life when you were encouraged? How did it feel? It is an amazing feeling, isn’t it? I invite you to encourage someone…anyone. I bet it will be a great experience! May God and Love bless you and encourage your heart and spirit to encourage others.

Giving With Joy

Bill Clinton once stated, “…when we give what we can, and give it with joy, we don’t just renew the American tradition of giving, we also renew ourselves.”  I know this to be absolutely true as I continue with my Gift of Love campaign. I have been giving each work of art, the hand painted bags, to individuals with joy; and, in return, I felt renewed and uplifted. I have not been giving out these Gifts of Love for this feeling. My greatest desire is to be able to give to the world what I feel in my heart…love and kindness, which are things we all need in order to create positive changes. It is my desire model the behaviors for which I would love to see in the world. I feel so blessed and grateful to receive such positive feelings in return for each gift I have given.

Whether it is a work of art from your heart, or a donation, a gift for a special occasion, an uplifting remark, or simply a heartwarming smile, you will find when you give anything with joy, you will get a sense of warmth in your own heart. This renewal or spark can be quite addicting. I encourage you to try it.

Gifts Of Love Update 9

Today I detailed 3 more Gifts Of Love; and, I went back  and added more details to Gift #29 and #30. I am almost completely satisfied with those two. I will look at them again tomorrow. I am certain I need to work on Gift #31 to add a little more details to her hands and feet (and maybe her face). I am pleased with my progress as I am putting so much heart into each of these Gifts Of Love.

Gifts Of Love #6 and #7 are in route to Laurie and Terri, the two winners for the weekly drawing. I will be drawing one or two more winners this week to receive a Gift of Love. Just leave me a comment to let me know you are interested. I love feedback and truly appreciate your comments.

Gifts of Love Update 8

Today I detailed 2 more Gifts of Love as you can see in the picture above. It has been a bit of a slow day as I seemed to have gotten a touch of flu or something. I am not surprised with the damp, cooler weather we have experienced lately.  I bet you are wondering who won this week for the Gift of Love bag drawing. I drew out the following 2 names: Terri Dorr and Laurie Story!! Congratulations!! I will be in contact with you this week to get your mailing addresses.

If any of you wish to be a recipient of one of these Gifts of Love, I will be doing a special drawing (one or two winners) each week until I finish painting all the Gifts of Love. I am on bag #30 for detailing and #68 for background art. All you need to do is leave a comment on my blog. The more comments you leave, the more times your name will go into the “hat”. The winners will be announced on Saturdays or Sundays. The Gift of Love will be sent out to you as soon as I get your mailing address.

Gifts of Love Update 7

Today was a delightful day of getting back into the swing of creating more backgrounds for my Gifts of Love campaign. There are now a total of 67 bags with paint on them. Twenty-eight Gifts of Love are completed.

Last Monday, I presented a Gift of Love to my newest friend and associate, LeRoyce. She was absolutely delighted to receive it. She is the fourth recipient of one of these works of love and art.

I know I will have more opportunities this week to present a few more Gifts of Love to others. Below are images of my latest creations: 5 completed bags, and fifteen in process with their backgrounds, which includes the ten I painted today.

Gifts Of Love Update 3

I am somewhat over the hump! I have paint on over 50 Gifts Of Love now! Twenty are completed and one gift has been given so far. As of tonight, I have 51 bags with paint on them. Pictured above is the background art on the 31 bags that will be transformed into Gifts Of Love over the course of this week. It just occurred to me that these Gifts of Love are metaphors for our lives as we evolve as people who grow more with love and compassion, and one day transform. One paint stroke at a time, one bag at a time, and one heart at a time, transformation will happen. This brings a big smile to my heart and soul.
