Grateful for Teamwork (TY-22)

team-work

I deeply appreciate teamwork! Let me share a story that has been passed along in my circles for at least a decade. I have no idea who first wrote it, but it needs to be shared as an example what teamwork is not:

This is a story of four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.

There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure Somebody would do it.

Anybody could have done it but Nobody did it.

Somebody got angry with that because it was Everybody’s job.

Everybody thought Anybody could do it but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it.

It ended that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what  Anybody could have done.

To this date these four people are still arguing why Nobody did the job.

This story also brought to mind a quote by Thomas Jefferson: “Never trouble another for what you can do yourself.”

Teamwork and cooperation is all about working together, delegating parts of the whole to tackle a challenge that one person alone cannot do. Certainly if it is single task that one can do alone, there is no need to delegate; however, if it is a large project or endeavor, then teamwork becomes imperative. There is no time for arguing or debate. I am grateful for teamwork where there is productive meeting of the minds, where everyone has the same vision and goal. I appreciate the efforts of each person on that team who make the project possible, such as a major fund-raiser for a worthy and charitable organization. A successful fund-raiser needs a team of people to work together.

I am grateful specifically to the volunteers and team players who made a recent fund-raiser for the Friends of the Poquoson Public Library successful and fun! Over 30 people were involved sharing many hours organizing volunteers, creating and placing public announcements, collecting books, sorting books, setting up the space of the fund-raising event (tent, tables, books), selling the books, cleaning up, etc. I would like to thank each and every one who were involved! Thank you so much for contributing your team spirit! You made the event worthwhile and successful!

Grateful for Teachers (TY-21)

ako-nov012-2013

Teachers come in many forms. You have your traditional classroom teachers and then you have people, situations and events in your life, which may teach you life lessons. These teachers in our lives are very important whether they be people, situations or events, because they help us to experience things and gain wisdom. I deeply appreciate all the different and unexpected teachers in my life.

Some came in the form of heart breaks, natural disasters and embarrassing situations; and, others came in the form of significant people in my life including traditional teachers. I am grateful for the bullies who taunted me, because they taught me resilience. I am grateful for the fears in my life, because they taught me courage. I am grateful for the wants and desires in my life, because they taught me patience. Every life lesson had a teacher for whom and which I value and appreciate.

Grateful for Veterans (TY-20)

AKO-MyAmericanHeart

Today, I would like to recognize and appreciate veterans. I often do not think about all the wonderful men and women who have devoted their lives to defend our wonderful country (United States of America); yet, many of my dearest friends and a few of my relatives have served in the armed branches  (Navy, Air Force, Army, National Guard, Coast Guard and Marines) . They are honorable people and I love them dearly.

I appreciate the time they spent away from their families to serve under uncertain conditions to maintain our military presence and protect/inspire democracy in unstable areas of the world. I am grateful for their sense of duty, their enthusiasm, and their self-discipline. While, I value and appreciate all the veterans in my life, today I would like to thank every veteran for their honorable services to our great nation. I salute you!

Grateful When Things Work (TY-19)

ako-nov08-2013

In the past 24+ hours I have been frustrated with my computer. It kept freezing up on me so that I could not use my mouse or keyboard. For me, this circumstance was a great reminder to be grateful when things work!

Therefore, I have devoted today’s blog to thank all the devices and modern conveniences in my life. I deeply appreciate my alarm clock, the hot water heater, indoor plumbing, the toilet, the bathroom sink, the shower, the washing machine and dryer, my computer, my scanner/printer, the telephone, my cellular/smart phone, my car, electricity, electric lights, the microwave oven, the stove, and every single device that I take for granted when they are in working order.

I am ever so grateful that my life is so much easier because of all these things that do function as I expect them to do. Unfortunately, we often do not even think about them until they do not. Thank you!!! I really do appreciate your significant role in my life.

Grateful to be Me (TY-18)

AKO-AttitudeOfGratitude

Today, I am grateful to be ME, because as you can see, it is ME that can set my CREATIVE heart and soul FREE! (Dr. Angi quote). I am grateful that I can rhyme from time to time, as well as all my qualities and attributes. I am even grateful for my faults and shortcomings. I am grateful that I have a positive outlook on life and that I find it easy to care about people.

I have the innate ability to see both sides of most situations, which allows me to be objective most of the time. I am grateful that I am able to profess confidently who I am even through my doubt due to my courageous  heart. I am grateful that I am able to write whatever comes to mind without worrying too much about what I have just said only to discover that it was indeed profound. I am grateful that I can laugh at myself and not take myself too seriously. Today, I deeply appreciate who I am and for what I believe…love, kindness, compassion, God and humanity…especially our ability to bounce back and adapt. Today, I am celebrating, ME!

Grateful for Differences (TY-17)

AKO-ShareJoyAndSorrow

A world without differences would not only be boring, but it would also be stagnant that is without growth and learning experiences. I am grateful for differences, whether it be difference of opinion or different styles and trends. Differences allow each of us to be unique and to stand out. Differences allow us to be imaginative and creative.

Without difference, everyone and everything would be the same, right? For example, everyday would be the same with the same weather, the time would not change, there would only be one species of the same gender speaking the same language thinking the same thing…it could get quite nonsensical. Right? I deeply appreciate having variety, contrasts and differences. These differences are in fact necessary. Viva la difference.

Grateful for Friendship (TY-16)

Friendship 001

Friendships can often be taken for granted, especially those long-standing since childhood. I deeply appreciate all the interpersonal relationships I have and had in my life. Each person with whom I engaged in conversations, activities and other events have played a significant role in molding who I am today. I deeply care about each of my friends, no matter how long I have known them and no matter if I have ever met them face-to-face or not.

Each interaction has been special and I am grateful for each moment we shared, whether we exchanged e-mails, comments, talked on the phone, responded or posted on Facebook, Tweeted, blogged, etc. I deeply appreciate the time involved and the thoughts behind each moment, where you have thought about me. Thank you so very much for being a part of my life!

Grateful for Kindness (TY-15)

AKOQuoteBkgd010

We are blessed to be in a world where most people value kindness and compassion. I am extremely grateful for kindness and those who practice it daily. Witnessing kindness in action is one of the most uplifting events to observe.

I am grateful to be able to practice love and kindness daily in every aspect of my life. Love and kindness brings such value to my life and my purpose. I am an advocate of kindness and I delight in promoting love and kindness in everything I write, paint and do. Focusing on kindness, brings more kindness to myself and others. Kindness is the center of my being.   I profoundly appreciate kindness.

Appreciating Time (TY-14)

ako-nov01-2013

I am grateful for time; and, this weekend we get the hour back we saved over the spring for daylight savings time (in my part of the world). The beauty about time is we (usually) receive the same amount daily to use as we wish. We do have choice in this even if it seems like we do not. For instance, a commute to work takes a certain amount of time that is pre-designated; however, you can utilize the time by repeating affirmations in your mind as you drive, listen to inspirational music or a book on cd/tape.

Time is truly our best friend and it needs to be appreciated. Too often we allow time to slip away often unnoticed without really using it to do something productive,  positive, or memorable. I intend to spend a moment of time to really appreciate the time I have; and, this weekend I am grateful to have an extra hour.

Grateful for Smiles (TY-12)

ako-smile

Smiles uplift my spirits, especially the unexpected smiles of strangers. I genuinely appreciate the smiles of others. No matter how my day is going, a smile brings me up.

This simple facial gesture conveys an unspoken message that everything is going to be alright and you are wonderful just as you are. A smile is an expression of kindness in which the joyous spirit of another touches the hearts of all who witness that smile. A smile is easy and simple to do; and, it is a small thing that often makes a big difference in the lives of others. I am very grateful for smiles.
