Patience

Patience is a quality of heart that can be greatly enhanced with deliberate practice. ~ Dr. Richard Carlson, Ph.D.

Patience is a gift of time. It is a state of allowing yourself and others to take their time, to be who they are and to wait. It is a very kind and loving action, but it is not easy. It takes practice.

It is said patience is a virtue and in the Bible there is a verse that starts with: Love is patient… (“Love is patient, love is kind” (1 Corinthians 13:4–8a)). Could it be said that patience is a form of love (as is kindness)? I believe it is. Patience may not always be the easiest to deliver; but, it is readily available in our hearts to give when we deliberately think about it and practice it.

Patience is definitely a quality of the heart. The more we practice patience, the more enriched we become as human beings.

Patient Attention

If I have ever made any valuable discoveries, it has been owing more to patient attention than to any other talent. ~ Sir Isaac Newton

I wholeheartedly agree. It is when I pay close attention with any amount of patience that I make my greatest discoveries…thank you Sir Isaac! Haste makes waste may be a cliché but how often have you found that when you rush through any project, you end up making mistakes. Patient attention to details and taking your time with everything in your life results in great things like a well-planned event, a fabulous painting or poem, or an amazing project, invention or portfolio. Patient attention requires time; therefore, those things in your life that are most important, which require patient attention will need plenty of time. What is important in your life? Are you able to give it patient attention?

One Moment At A Time

I often need to remind myself to be gentle and patient…with myself.
~ Dr. Angela Kowitz Orobko

One moment at a time is all I can handle. In all honesty, it is all any of us can handle. The past has lapsed and cannot be and should not be relived. The future is yet to come; and even with the best of plans and intentions, it is only in this very moment that we live. We live one moment at a time.

As I look ahead to the next few days, I see many events that will be taking place. I choose not to stress over these events, because I can only live these events one moment at a time. I will be exactly where I need to be when these events take place. I have the calendar out and I am sketching up a doable routine for myself, which will include walking between 45 to 60 minutes with my father 3 to 5 times this week.

I am looking forward to each and every item I intend for myself; and, I will no longer flounder around in my days going from one activity or project to another without some structure. This will afford me the sense of accomplishment…a start and finish. Progress will be made, because I will put for a specific amount of time to each activity or project. As I stated in another blog article (To Be Gentle and Patient…September 23, 2012) , I need to remind myself to be gentle and patient…with myself. We can only live one moment at a time; furthermore, nothing great was built in a day.

To Be Gentle and Patient…

I often need to remind myself to be gentle and patient…with myself.
~ Dr. Angela Kowitz Orobko

Transitions that I wish to make need to be gradual. I cannot expect to do it all in a day. It is impractical and unrealistic! No one decides in one moment to run a marathon and then try to do it the very next day! No! You need to start out gradually by slowly adding time to your walking/jogging/running routine. If daily exercise is not a part of your daily routine, then start out by walking/running for 5 to 10 minutes everyday the first week; then add time as you feel comfortable. Eventually you will be able to run the distance of a marathon.

This is the same for any major life style change we wish to make in our lives. If you wish to change your eating habits, you would gradually add and/or eliminate various foods over a course of a month or more until it becomes a habit. For example, if you wish to become a vegetarian, you would start with one or two meals a week eliminating meat and adding other protein sources. You would slowly and gradually create a bank of recipes and reorganize your refrigerator and pantry to support your life style change.

Right now, reorganizing is my pet project. I have decided to rearrange and re-do my studio so that it is more functional. I am streamlining it for efficiency, but this is taking me more time than I expected. I am going through a period of disarray, which is overwhelming. I need to remind myself to be gentle and patient…with myself. As with all things in life, it is a great reminder.

Rome was not built in a day. Gradual, doable steps are what I need to take; furthermore, I choose to do each step with joy or not do it at all! If it isn’t fun, why bother? I am also visualizing how wonderful my space will look after I have completed my project. Oh, YES! It is going to be AMAZING! I will post before and after pictures after the everything is done; but, for now, I am in process. And, I am choosing to be gentle and patient with my progress.  Are you choosing to be gentle and patient with yourself?

Practicing Patience

A gift of love and kindness is made when practicing patience, especially with children and those with less experiences. ~Dr. Angela Kowitz Orobko

There are times in our lives when holding our actions and our tongues are easier, but there are many times when it is harder. It is important to take a few moments to remember who we are, who they are and what kind of outcome would we like to see during these harder times. It takes self-discipline and patience.

Children and many adults can try our patience, but when we choose love, compassion and understanding, the outcome of the situation raises our level of energy to one that is more positive. Being love for each other is what Jesus would have us do because ultimately it brings out the best in everyone involved in those trying situations in our lives. It creates a life with little regret. It creates a joyful existence for ourselves where we bring joy and happiness to others through the practice of patience.

This brings to mind one of my favorite Bible verses:

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

New International Version (NIV)

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Consider mentally stepping back from any situation, whether sitting in heavy traffic, in the office with a menacing co-worker or with your more petulant than usual loved ones at home; and, take ten seconds to breathe slowly, and tell yourself, “I am where I need to be; worry and other negative feelings is not going to change the situation; choosing love and joy will make me feel better and may make the situation better for others, too.” Mentally rehearsing these statements in neutral/positive times will make it easier to put it into action during those negative times when you need them the most. Practicing patience truly is one of the best gifts we can give each other (and ourselves).

IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD.. LOVE A WOMAN

Below is a poem written by Lisa Citore that was shared on Facebook by one of my friends. I felt compelled to post it here in my blog because it fits with my desire to change the world one heart at a time. Above is an art piece I painted inspired by her words. Tomorrow, I will share my latest update on my Gifts of Love campaign, which is progressing and unfolding in its own Divine timing, one heart at a time bring love and joy to each person who has received one so far.

IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD.. LOVE A WOMAN – by Lisa Citore

“If you want to change the world… love a woman-really love her.

Find the one who calls to your soul, who doesn’t make sense.

Throw away your check list and put your ear to her heart and listen.

Hear the names, the prayers, the songs of every living thing-
every winged one, every furry and scaled one,
every underground and underwater one, every green and flowering one,
every not yet born and dying one…
Hear their melancholy praises back to the One who gave them life.

If you haven’t heard your own name yet, you haven’t listened long enough.

If your eyes aren’t filled with tears, if you aren’t bowing at her feet,
you haven’t ever grieved having almost lost her.

If you want to change the world… love a woman-one woman

beyond yourself, beyond desire and reason,
beyond your male preferences for youth, beauty and variety
and all your superficial concepts of freedom.

We have given ourselves so many choices
we have forgotten that true liberation
comes from standing in the middle of the soul’s fire
and burning through our resistance to Love.

There is only one Goddess.

Look into Her eyes and see-really see
if she is the one to bring the axe to your head.
If not, walk away. Right now.
Don’t waste time “trying.”

Know that your decision has nothing to do with her

because ultimately it’s not with who,
but when we choose to surrender.

If you want to change the world… love a woman.

Love her for life-beyond your fear of death,
beyond your fear of being manipulated
by the Mother inside your head.

Don’t tell her you’re willing to die for her.

Say you’re willing to LIVE with her,
plant trees with her and watch them grow.

Be her hero by telling her how beautiful she is in her vulnerable majesty,
by helping her to remember every day that she IS Goddess
through your adoration and devotion.

If you want to change the world… love a woman

in all her faces, through all her seasons
and she will heal you of your schizophrenia-
your double-mindedness and half-heartedness
which keeps your Spirit and body separate-
which keeps you alone and always looking outside your Self
for something to make your life worth living.

There will always be another woman.
Soon the new shiny one will become the old dull one
and you’ll grow restless again, trading in women like cars,
trading in the Goddess for the latest object of your desire.

Man doesn’t need any more choices.

What man needs is Woman, the Way of the Feminine,
of Patience and Compassion, non-seeking, non-doing,
of breathing in one place and sinking deep intertwining roots
strong enough to hold the Earth together
while she shakes off the cement and steel from her skin.

If you want to change the world… love a woman, just one woman .

Love and protect her as if she is the last holy vessel.

Love her through her fear of abandonment
which she has been holding for all of humanity.

No, the wound is not hers to heal alone.
No, she is not weak in her codependence.

If you want to change the world… love a woman

all the way through
until she believes you,
until her instincts, her visions, her voice, her art, her passion,
her wildness have returned to her-
until she is a force of love more powerful
than all the political media demons who seek to devalue and destroy her.

If you want to change the world,
lay down your causes, your guns and protest signs.
Lay down your inner war, your righteous anger

and love a woman…

beyond all of your striving for greatness,
beyond your tenacious quest for enlightenment.

The holy grail stands before you
if you would only take her in your arms
and let go of searching for something beyond this intimacy.

What if peace is a dream which can only be re-membered
through the heart of Woman?
What if a man’s love for Woman, the Way of the Feminine
is the key to opening Her heart?

If you want to change the world…love a woman

to the depths of your shadow,
to the highest reaches of your Being,
back to the Garden where you first met her,
to the gateway of the rainbow realm
where you walk through together as Light as One,
to the point of no return,
to the ends and the beginning of a New Earth.”
