Appreciating New Experiences

I love and appreciate experiencing new things. For example, I am currently involved in NaNoWriMo for the first time. NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month and NaNoWriMo.org sponsors a 50,000 word challenge during the month of November.

The premise is that you write your novel (a genre of your choice) during the month of November and you try to reach or exceed 50,000 words, which is probably equivalent to 125 pages without space between lines.  I have a little over 12,000 words written so far and it is my goal to have over 15,000 words written before the weekend is over. The idea is to create a first draft. I am trying very hard not to edit my work as I go; but, I tend to reread what I wrote; furthermore, I find myself going back and deleting, rewriting and adding more content.

On the NaNoWriMo site, I have writing buddies. With the buddy system, I have found wonderful support. My writing buddies keep me accountable so that I am writing everyday. I never had writing buddies before. The site also sends pep-talk messages from notable published writers.

Another new experience  that I appreciate is serving on a committee for a tree-planting event. I am working with 2 phenomenal women, who are as enthusiastic as I am to educate our community and promote the tree-planting event, the importance of planting trees and how to do it properly in our local environment. We have laid out a tentative plan, which we will present to our environmental group later this month. I delight in finding new experiences to try, meeting new people and doing new things. What new experiences have you tried and appreciated lately?

Grateful for Time Change

I am so grateful that I had an extra hour of sleep last night! I felt a bit more perky and energetic as I got up this morning. I have so many wonderful plans for the new week, which start tonight. First I would like to write to my 10,000 word goal written by tonight for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo); I already have 6300 words written. I also plan on auditioning for a part in Fox on the Fairway with the Poquoson Islander Players. Tuesday is Election Day,  Wednesday, I have a Poquoson Citizens for the Environment committee meeting.

I love that when I wake up now, the sun is up with me. I realize, too, that it will be getting dark an hour earlier. The shorter days make me appreciate the daylight that much more. I plan to seize each moment of daylight as it becomes more and more precious. How did you spend your extra hour this weekend? Any plans to enjoy the daylight hours as they dwindle away? If any of you are participating in NaNoWriMo, please seek me out as a writing buddy. My pen name is DocAngi (http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/participants/docangi).

Hand-written Notes

There is something special about receiving a hand-written note.
~ Dr. Angi K. Orobko

Hand-written notes and letters are such a gift! I feel that the person behind it took that extra special time to scribe it just for me. Handwriting is becoming a lost art as more and more of our children are learning keyboarding instead of handwriting. I am aware that many school system’s no longer require and/or include cursive writing in their lessons anymore. I feel that is quite a loss.

With the dawning of computers and hand-held digital devices, more and more of us are typing and text-messaging (texting). Our own language cannot even keep up with the new verbs we are creating as we type messages on our mobile phones and other electronic devices. Furthermore, our words have been reduced to acronyms. LOL (laugh out loud) Am I the only one finding it hard to keep up with all of this digital-techno-speak?

Oh, please do not misunderstand. I do appreciate the convenience of being able to communicate any time I like, 24/7 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week); but, it does seem just a tad bit less personal. Don’t you think? The internet is certainly an amazing source for information (and misinformation).

Most questions can be answered at the tip of our fingertips by doing a Google search. Has “google” become a verb? I googled it and Wikipedia states that the Oxford English and Merriam Webster Collegiate dictionaries have added it in 2006. Really? And yet, my spellchecker has it red-lined. Hmm!

Let me get back on the topic of hand-written notes. On the one side, I love receiving them. On the other side, I love to write them. Why? When I hand-write a note, a letter, or a journal entry, it allows me to slow down and take time and reflect. It can be quite meditative.

One of my favorite gifts to give others especially around the holidays are hand-written messages (in their holiday cards). I believe these messages are deeply appreciated, even though many of my loved ones do not reciprocate this. I usually get a Merry Christmas and a signature. It saddens me to think that holiday card exchanges have been reduced down to a chore. This is a golden opportunity to scribe a special message to share how much we appreciate our family and friends with hand-written messages. Consider taking the time to reflect and appreciate your loved ones this holiday season by sending a  hand-written message of love, appreciation and blessings.

What is art and writing to me?

The end-product is simply the by-product of my joy. ~ Dr. Angela Kowitz Orobko

What is art and writing to me? Should it  be more expressive and intuitive or deliberate and technical (commercialized)? Should it be for the creator or the spectator? Should it be about the process or the end-product?

In my heart and soul I feel art and writing are expressive and intuitive processes where deliberate technique needs to take a backseat. It is the only way I know how to be creative. My favorite art pieces are the ones that had no plan…they simply evolved. My favorite articles are those that were written in the moment; however, I do find I need a concept map to outline my major writing projects that are over 100 pages long.

My art is more for the creator and less for the spectator. If I visually delight others as much as I delight myself in the process, then I am TWICE blessed. I write about what I most want to read. I keep the reader in mind, me. If it is boring to me, then I know others will be bored. I interject humor when I can, because I enjoy getting a chuckle when I read.

I wholeheartedly feel that art and writing are about the processes and not necessarily the end-products. When the end-product turns out AMAZING erstwhile I delight in creating it, then I am in total ecstasy…but for me, it is all about the process. The end-product is simply the by-product of my joy.

Lines Going Straight….Bah humbug!

Untitled ART BOOK 101 Chapter 1.1 (This will be an ongoing work in progress.)

chapter 1 Straight Lines and Stick Figures, Oh My

Lines Going Straight….Bah humbug!

How many times have you said to yourself, I can’t even draw a straight line or stick figure? How am I suppose to create…..(fill in the blank). What is holding you back? Lack of confidence? Fear? Discouragement? It couldn’t be laziness, could it?

First of all, let us dispel the belief that your lines need to be straight and exact. Very few creative projects require precision unless you are constructing a house or a bridge. Now, pick up your favorite writing/drawing tool. Get out a scrap piece of paper. In fact, go ahead and gather as much scrap paper as you can find. Let’s has some fun creating lines.

I am going to have you close your eyes and create lines for at least 60 seconds (yes, a whole minute). Set up your space so you are sitting comfortably. Have your tools in place: paper and pen/pencil/any other art material you would like. Get ready, get set, GO! Now, take a look at your creation. Never mind passing judgment on your creation, focus on how it felt to just put your pen or pencil to paper and allow yourself to freely create lines? This is one of many ways you can express yourself. It is quite liberating.

I challenge you to try this at least once a day!

Hunger!

What is your hunger, your desire? For what are you hungry? What is that one thing your heart desires to be or have? Is it joy, bliss, fame, success… ? What are you doing every day to work towards that hunger or desire? Do you at least think about it? Do you see yourself there already?

No! Why not? Visualize yourself in your happy place, in your success. What are you doing in that future self?

Me, I am accepting a Nobel Peace Prize for my work in anti-bullying incentives and promoting love and kindness in the world. I am experiencing deep and intense joy and gratitude, because I know I did not do this all by myself. I did it with the help of everyone.

Everyone who believed in love and kindness, in themselves and in me. I am relishing this moment! I am celebrating with the world, because it is a better place because I am here to contribute to it.

I knew one day my daily blogging, creating art, writing, sharing of my time and self would eventually create more love and kindness where I live and makes its way around the world. How could my love and kindness not be experienced by others. Sure, it seemed years ago that I only made a small difference, but I grew to learn that it was those small differences that made a big difference in the lives of others. And, when they experienced joy, they spread this love to others. And so it grew and grew and grew.

Tears well in my eyes to see how much love there is in the world, now…not just because of me, but because each of you were with me. You made a difference, too. We did it together and I feel so blessed to be celebrating this moment with everyone.

That is a glimpse into my future. What does yours look like? What is your hunger, your desire?

Balance

Have you ever felt off-balanced or out of sorts? Most people have. What does balance look like and how does one define balance? Balance is a state of equilibrium, where one is in a place of contentment. One can think of balance as being in a place where it is neither hot nor cold. It is warm and comfortable; it is purple, orange or green; it is maybe; it is something in between the extremes. Balance is about being in the middle. Visualize a circus performer balancing on a tight-rope and walking slowly and deliberately. That is one way of looking at balance.

How can balance be applied to one’s life or how can one get balance in his or her life? Awareness is the first step to achieving balance. Stop, look and reflect and see what might be causing the imbalance. An unexpected event can cause imbalance in one’s life, such as, a car accident or losing one’s job. How does one cope with life-altering events? Change your focus from the life-altering situation and look at the big picture. How?

The best way to change your focus and get back into balance is to ask a few questions: What is the lesson in all of this? What is the positive side in this situation? Where is the opportunity in this situation? How can I bless it and move back to a place of equilibrium? And, what can I laugh about this situation in my life? Andy Dooley has a fabulous you tube video that address how to feel good. Feeling good can equate to feeling balanced as long as one is feeling good when he or she is back in his or her routine and balanced again.

Seeing a negative situation from different perspectives can help one achieve balance. Talk to yourself as if you were looking at yourself as another person, in other words, try to be objective. Balance can be achieved when people address themselves with their given names. Self-dialogue could look something like this: (The person’s name is Joe or Mary.) “Hey, Joe/Mary, yes life is less than perfect right now, but look at the blessings in the situation… it is a blessing to meet talented people in a different field of expertise, it is a chance to learn something new, it is a blessing to see things differently; yes, it hurts right now, but now different choices and decisions can be made about the future…”

One can also achieve balance by sitting in quiet, which means take time to sit alone in silence and simply breathe slowly. Focus on the breathing. If one needs more centering and focus, then one can pray or meditate. A person can pray for balance or simply state over and over in his or her mind: “I am in balance” or ” I have balance” or “I am balance.” Ambient music or sounds of nature in the background may help to create an environment conducive to prayer and meditation. Using aromatherapy is also a great way to create a tranquil environment.

When one is in a state of overwhelm there are three things he or she can do to get balance again. First of all, one can make small movements toward the source of the overwhelm like needing to lose 50 pounds or putting together a major business proposal.  A person can take little steps; it is movement, albeit small, that will ultimately get a person to his or her big goal. These mini-goals could be like letting go of one to two pounds a week or tackling the business proposal in chunks (such as researching it or writing it in fifteen minute bites).

The second thing one can do is not get hung up on perfectly moving toward his or her major goal. It is still a movement toward his or her goal. When one is moving toward a weight loss goal, he or she need not get caught up in the minutia of having to follow a weight loss plan perfectly. If one had a lapse of judgment for a snack or meal, this does not have to sabotage the efforts one has already put into his or her weight loss progress. An individual can simply take ownership of that one mishap and make the next decision a better one. In creating a business proposal, writing something is better than writing nothing at all. One can always edit his or her work after the proposal is completed.

The third thing one can do is to create a support system or delegate some of the responsibility of that overwhelming goal. With a business proposal, one can seek others to do the research so he or she can work on the writing. With weight loss goals, one can seek a support system with others who also wish to lose weight. They can hold each other accountable, dialogue about the challenges they have had, and celebrate the small and large victories.

One of the best things an individual can do to get from a place of imbalance to balance is to do something totally different. If one is traditionally very independent and almost never communicates his or her challenges to others, then, perhaps it is due time for this person to seek guidance from an expert or counselor. If one continues to do what he or she have always done, then he or she will continue to get what he or she have always gotten (a quote adopted from Anthony Robbins and edited by Dr. Angela Kowitz Orobko). Here is an amusing thought that Albert Einstein shared, “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Does this suggest many people are insane? Perhaps.

Consider this, how can people shift their thoughts and emotions toward balance? How does it feel?
